Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

The UK’s crown prosecution service (CPS) stated the 24-year-old was caught driving at 99 mph (159 kmph) in a 70 mph (113 kmph) zone and witnesses claimed to have seen him with a balloon at his mouth in Cheshire in August 2023.

He will be sentenced on May 9, 2025. Dangerous driving carries a maximum custodial sentence of two years.

Williams was described as driving “in an erratic manner” on the A34 before colliding with another vehicle and crashing into the central reservation.

His Audi A3 was extensively damaged and the Ford Fiesta he collided with lost a wheel.

Williams was driving with a female passenger, who the CPS said was seen filming her and Williams with her phone.

The full-back was breathalysed at the scene, and this was negative. He was then taken to hospital for treatment on his injuries.

Williams was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and driving without third party insurance, and pleaded guilty to both charges at Chester Crown Court on Friday.

Andrew Madden, a Senior Crown Prosecutor with CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: “Witnesses said Williams kept speeding up and then breaking sharply. It was clear he wasn’t in control of the vehicle. The driving was erratic and the speed was grossly excessive. Eventually, Williams lost control completely and crashed.

“It is a fortunate no one was seriously injured or killed. To drive at 99mph in those circumstances was extremely dangerous and placed the lives of other road users at serious risk of harm.”

The incident took place on August 20, 2023. Williams joined Ipswich Town on loan from Manchester United four days later, before making his debut for the then Championship club as a substitute against Leeds United on August 26.

Williams is currently without a club after leaving Manchester United following the conclusion of his contract in June.

The former England youth international is a product of the United academy and made 51 senior appearances for the club.
