Liverpool can win its first trophy of the Arne Slot when it takes on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. The Reds suffered disappointment in midweek as their hopes of a historic treble were ended by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
But Wembley beckons on Sunday as Slot looks to claim his first piece of silverware since replacing Jurgen Klopp. His side is in pole position to win the Premier League but for now the focus is on Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.
The Magpies are on the hunt for their first major trophy in over half a century, and the Carabao Cup presents an opportunity to make that dream a reality.
Newcastle has a chance to etch its name into the history books this Sunday. Despite being viewed as underdogs, Howe’s side managed a 3-3 draw against Liverpool earlier this season.
Newcastle finds itself in the Premier League’s top six this season. While this might not seem as impressive as Liverpool’s performance – who is on course to clinch their 20th Premier League title – it’s a notable achievement for the Magpies.
This is the second time in three years that Newcastle has come within touching distance of the cup, having lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the 2023 final.

The team that lifts this season’s Carabao Cup will pocket a prize of $130,000 (£100,000). The victor will also secure a spot in the Conference League if they haven’t already qualified for European football by other means.
While this is a moot point for Liverpool due to its commanding lead at the top of the table and the likelihood that it will win the competition – it could be beneficial for the Magpies. Meanwhile, the competition’s runners-up will walk away with $65,000 (£50,000).
The Carabao Cup prize money pales in comparison to the $2.6 million (£2 million) awarded to the club that wins the FA Cup. The Premier League prize pool offers even more than that – with all 20 clubs understood to have netted more than $130M/£100m in the 2023-24 season.
