TBR Football understands that West Ham United have backed away from their bid to land England midfielder Angel Gomes.
The Hammers are yet to receive a response to their initial offer, which they believed would be enough to land the Lille midfielder on a free transfer next summer.
TBR Football exclusively revealed West Ham’s first approach for Gomes came in January, which was one of the largest overall deals they have put to a player.
Some weeks since the offer, West Ham owner David Sullivan has decided the club should move on – given the player is continuing talks with other clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur.
West Ham back away from Angel Gomes talks
West Ham United do not want their offer to be used as a negotiating tool with other sides for Angel Gomes, so as it stands, the East London club’s move is off the table, sources have told Graeme Bailey – chief correspondent at TBR Football.
The Hammers could return to talks, although it would need Gomes’ representatives to indicate their willingness and at this stage, they have backed away from talks.
Meanwhile, Graham Potter’s side have also been trying to sign his Lille teammate Jonathan David, but he is currently in advanced talks with Barcelona.
Tottenham hopeful of signing Angel Gomes
TBR Football is told more than half-a-dozen clubs have made offers for Gomes, and one of those, as we have revealed, is Tottenham Hotspur who are hopeful of landing him.
Gomes, who has been dubbed as ‘amazing’, has transitioned into a deep-lying playmaker at Lille and would add depth to Ange Postecoglou’s midfield options alongside Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr.
Spurs have been pushing hard to sign Gomes, who is considering a return to England having spent time in France and Belgium.
Manchester United are also in the frame still to sign their former academy star along with clubs from France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
