Bayern stumble again in the league.
The roar at full-time said it all. Union Berlin may not be threatening for any European places this season but to snatch a point off Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga…that’s no small achievement.
The visitors had a performance to be proud of, stifling Bayern’s attacking efforts with dogged defending and pouncing the moment Bayern made a mistake — keeper Jonas Urbig’s parry in the 83rd minute.
Players and executives were in just as celebratory a mood as their fans, as captured afterward via FCBayern.com.
“We always believed we’d be able to score,” said general manager Horst Heldt. “At half-time the coach told the team they had defended very well. But of course we also had to attack and score. We had little possession in the first half, but that was clear. You need an idea against Bayern, and many teams have ideas. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It worked for us today, and that’s the only thing that counts.”
Right-back Christopher Trimmel was our tip for jersey swap on the day in the BFW Match Awards, and had this to say: “I think if you play against Bayern like this — we sat very, very deep and tried to neutralize their strengths – we mustn’t allow too much. Something did happen, but fortunately we scored the one goal. Of course Bayern were clearly better.”
Finally, goal-scorer Benedict Hollerbach weighed in.
“It’s very special because Bayern are just the best club in Germany and we turned in a superb display today, we deserved that,” the former Bayern academy talent enthused. “It takes a whole lot against Bayern, so I’m very glad about such a goal. It’s just important for a forward to always be in the box, because that’s the only way to be dangerous. And yes, when the ball fell to me, I was very happy and scored.”
