Jonas Urbig had his first big setback at Bayern Munich on Saturday…

When Bayern Munich goalkeeper Jonas Urbig swatted a cross attempt directly into the path of an oncoming Benedict Hollerbach to give up the game-tying goal against Union Berlin, the youngster was visibly unhappy with himself.

Urbig’s blunder was just one of a series of issues in the game, though, and maybe one of the last concerning because it was a one-off situation. Knowing that, a couple of Bavarians raced in to defend the goalkeeper.

“He was furious himself, which is understandable. I think everyone has made mistakes in their career that led to a goal conceded. So we don’t have to bury our heads in the sand. Of course, it’s bitter because we should have won the game based on the run of play. But Jonas has done his job very well so far, and one mistake won’t change that,” Josip Stanišić told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl also backed Urbig and noted that the play was the result of a few different miscues.

“We win together, we lose together, and we draw together. Now you can say: We could have defended better against the header, we could have defended the cross better — a few players were involved in that goal, and that’s frustrating,” Eberl told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

When asked if he thought the error would affect Urbig’s confidence, Eberl said that he did not think that would be the case.

“No. After the Leverkusen game he wasn’t saying: ‘I’m already there.’ – He’ll have to deal with this the same way now. If goalkeepers are involved in goals [conceded], they have to deal with it. But I’m not worried about that. He’s a young player, but I’m not worried.”

Unfortunately for Urbig, that bitter taste of the mistake could linger as Manuel Neuer is expected to be back in time to face St. Pauli after the international break. Hopefully, the youngster will be able to put this one gaffe behind him in what should be a very long career.
