Ryan Sessegnon ultimately ended any chance of Tottenham Hotspur staging a comeback against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Ryan Sessegnon says he still has so much ‘respect’ for TottenhamRyan Sessegnon’s bad luck with injuries at Tottenham

Fulham won 2-0 thanks to Sessegnon’s late strike, one that he refused to celebrate following his five years at Tottenham.

In total the left-back played for Spurs 57 times, a spell with the club which was ultimately ravaged by injuries.

Sessegnon was a very popular figure in N17, a full-back who clearly had a ton of talent and perhaps could have thrived in Antonio Conte’s system, but he simply had no luck with injuries.

That being said, the Englishman is now starting to find some consistency with his availability back at boyhood club Fulham, where he’s often proving to be an effective impact player from the bench.

Ryan Sessegnon says he still has so much ‘respect’ for Tottenham

After the game, Sessegnon took to Instagram to share a message after scoring against his former club, suggesting that it was destined to happen.

Sessegnon wrote: “Written in the stars! +3! See you after the international break.”

In addition, the defender also spoke to BBC Match of the Day immediately after the match, and Sessegnon did actually comment on his time in north London.

The Fulham man showed his respect for Spurs by refusing to celebrate his late goal, even if it would have meant a lot back at the Cottage.

And after initially speaking about Fulham’s European aspirations, Sessegnon then admitted that he perhaps did have regrets from his time at Tottenham.

Sessegnon said: “It puts us right up there for the European spots, and it’s nice to get a goal as well.

“I was told to bring energy on the left-hand side. I was told to keep it tight but at the same time keep that threat going forward too.

“As a team we have one eye [on the European places] and we’re taking it game by game, we just need to keep going.

“I enjoyed my time [at Tottenham], five years at the club. Playing-wise I didn’t play as often as I’d have liked, mainly because of injuries, but I still respect the club.”

Ryan Sessegnon’s bad luck with injuries at Tottenham

Interestingly, Sessegnon admitted that Mauricio Pochettino never spoke to him at Tottenham during his time in charge.

Sessegnon was gutted when Conte was sacked, a manager he should have been well-suited to playing under.

Of course, it was Sessegnon’s injuries that curtailed those chances, a list that isn’t enjoyable reading for player or club.

2019/20 135 1 19
2018/19 13 1 3

But either way, it is redeeming to see Sessegnon making his way back to full fitness at Fulham.

And as Marco Silva will probably protest, there’s still so much left for the 24-year-old to achieve if he can put injuries behind him.
