The Carabao Cup, also known as the League Cup in England, is open to any club within the top four divisions of the English Football League, giving 92 teams an opportunity. Liverpool is the reigning champions of the tournament after Virgil van Dijk’s header in the 118th minute sealed a 1-0 win over Chelsea last season.

On the road to the final, Liverpool has beaten West Ham, Brighton, Southampton, and Tottenham, but face a driven Newcastle team attempting to win its first major domestic trophy since 1955. Newcastle has beaten Nottingham Forest, AFC Wimbledon, Chelsea, Brentford, and Arsenal on its way to the final.

Liverpool and Newcastle has already faced each other twice this season, with the Reds edging the head-to-head. The first meeting ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, before Liverpool won the most recent clash 1-0 at home.

Until recently, Liverpool was on for an historic quadruple due to remaining in all four major competitions. Liverpool remains dominant in the Premier League and has a 15-point lead at the top of the table with only nine games to play, but has suffered in other competitions.

Liverpool was knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, and suffered a shock defeat to Plymouth in the FA Cup. While the Premier League looks to be wrapped up, the Carabao Cup is the only other trophy Liverpool can win this season.

What time is the Carabao Cup final and how to watch?

The Carabao Cup final will take place at Wembley Stadium, London, on Sunday, March 16.

The game will kick-off at 4:30 p.m. local time, which is 12:30 p.m. E.T. and 9:30 a.m. PT.

In the US, the game will available to watch on CBS or can be streamed on Paramount+. For UK viewers, the game is being shown on free-to-air ITV1 and can be streamed for free on ITV X.

The game will also be shown on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football, with streaming available for Sky Go customers on laptops and mobile devices and the option for viewers to purchase a NOW TV membership.

Team news

On Wednesday, Liverpool confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold would not play in the final for the second successive season after suffering a minor injury in the loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. It’s a major blow as fellow right back Connor Bradley is already out injured, as is versatile defender Joe Gomez.

Ibrahima Konate also limped off against Paris Saint-Germain, but his issue was fatigue. Cody Gakpo has been working his way back from injury, and is expected to be fit.

Newcastle will be without Anthony Gordon after he was shown a red card against Brighton in a recent FA Cup clash, and defender Sven Botman remains out with a knee issue. Lewis Hall, who has been performing well for Newcastle this season, confirmed that he is having surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the campaign.
