Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk were ultimately powerless in stopping Newcastle United from ending their trophy drought to win the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle were inspired by the likes of Dan Burn and Alexander Isak who both took their chances brilliantly against Liverpool.

From Arne Slot’s perspective it’s been a very tough week or so, one that also saw Liverpool exit the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

Slot is still on course to win the Premier League in his first season at Anfield, but any talk of a treble or quadruple a few months ago will now have to stop.

Although, rather than focusing on Liverpool’s defeat, Newcastle deserve credit for delivering a sensational performance at Wembley.

Virgil van Dijk shows his class despite Liverpool’s Wembley defeat

Magnanimous in defeat, Liverpool captain Van Dijk showed his class at full-time after Liverpool’s tough-to-take defeat, a moment noticed by pundit Stephen Warnock.

Reporting for BBC Radio 5, Warnock noticed that the Dutchman almost immediately embraced Newcastle’s Burn.

Van Dijk then made a point of going around and shaking the hand of each Newcastle player individually, a captain who truly leads by example, even in difficult scenarios.

Sharing the moment, Warnock said: “There was an embrace between Virgil van Dijk and Dan Burn.

“Van Dijk stood at the Newcastle huddle – he went around and shook every player’s hand. He respected what Newcastle have done today.

“Class. A sign of respect for Newcastle.”

Eddie Howe becomes first English manager to win major domestic trophy in 17 years

Arne Slot was very classy after Liverpool’s defeat to PSG, and it’s credit to Liverpool that they aren’t letting their emotions boil over right now.

That being said, Eddie Howe actually became the first Englishman to win a major domestic trophy in 17-years at Wembley on Sunday.

he last English manager to do so was Harry Redknapp who won the FA Cup with Portsmouth back in 2008.

And also shared by the BBC, Howe was Redknapp’s first signing when he became Pompey’s manager, a bizarre turn of events.

A brilliant day for everyone connected with Newcastle, who negated the players who were absent for the final quite brilliantly.
