The German goalkeeper is being paid a significant sum from Bayern Munich.

Alexander Nübel has long been deemed the replacement for Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich. Nübel arrived in Munich in 2020 but has only played four matches for the Bavarians, all of which came in his first season in Munich. After almost five years, it should be time for Bayern Munich to cash in on their investment. And there has been no shortage of investing in Nübel.

As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Nübel’s contract is 11-12 million euros per year. This contract has now been automatically extended until 2030 which means 10 years of Nübel by the end of the contract. To put things into perspective, Stuttgart is on the hook for 1⁄3 of that salary, meaning Bayern is paying around 8 million euros a year for Nübel to be a Bayern Munich product.

Alexander Nübel’s Bayern salary is worth €11-12m gross per year. His contract was automatically extended until 2030 after Manuel Neuer’s renewal. Stuttgart are currently taking over around 1/3 of the salary. The current tendency is that Nübel will remain on loan at Stuttgart next season. But a permanent move to VfB in 2026 is unlikely due to the big salary.

Nübel has taken significant steps in recent years but the club is uncertain whether or not he will become the goalkeeper he was destined to become. That is evident in the club’s signing of Jonas Urbig from FC Koln. By taking a look at Nübel’s underlying metrics, there is reason for concern.

Nübel ranks fourth-last in the Bundesliga for Post-Shot Expected Goals minus Goals Allowed. A fancy word that measures how many expected goals a goalkeeper has had to save minus how many goals they have actually allowed. Nübel has -4.5 meaning he has conceded 4-5 more goals than he should have this season based on the quality and quantity of shots he has faced.

While there is more than goalkeeping than just big saves, it is certainly the most important. Nübel ranks well in distribution but his aerial presence is also forth-last in Crosses Stopped %.

Is Nübel worth the wait or is this an investment that won’t pay off? Nübel’s career has been solid with Stuttgart finishing second in the Bundesliga last season and rumors that he will be Julian Nagelsmann’s #1 heading into the March international break for Germany. Are these metrics bogus or is there a real concern about Nübel? Let us know your thoughts!
