‘Can’t happen’: Troy Deeney absolutely fuming with something Mathys Tel did in Tottenham’s defeat to Fulham

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur side suffered another worrying defeat at the hands of Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Postecoglou made several changes from Tottenham’s 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League a few days prior, presumably with the intention to freshen up his side.

However, Spurs’ performance was often lethargic and uninspired in west London, and Fulham deserved their win.

Jamie O’Hara talked about Postecoglou being sacked since and Tottenham are now 14th after 29 games played, an unacceptable position in any circumstances.

Right now it seems as if Spurs’ whole season is hinging on their European campaign, but throwing away crucial league matches simply isn’t sustainable.

Troy Deeney shocked by Mathys Tel’s effort levels against Fulham

That being said, Troy Deeney made a point about Mathys Tel’s effort levels when analysing the game for Match of the Day 2 – the pundit wasn’t impressed.

Tel made the headlines for facing up to Spurs’ travelling fans at the end of the game, something that’s commonplace in the Bundesliga, the league he’s arrived from.

And whilst those efforts to communicate with fans might be applauded by some, Deeney was in no mood to celebrate Tel’s running against Fulham.

Deeney said: “We could have showed you every single player giving the ball away, but we’re just going to highlight these two.

“[Rodrigo] Bentancur and Tel, who the manager just spoke about – wanted to get fit, just look, this is two minutes into the game.

“Look at the difference in running (with the Fulham players), obviously they turn the ball over, it’s a three versus two defensively which is not great.

“But look, look at Tel, look at Bentancur running past him – that can’t happen at any level.”

Then analysing Rodrigo Muniz’s opening goal for Fulham, Deeney continued: “It’s six versus two in the box here (in favour of Spurs) and I’m going to tell you now they have three touches in the box.

“And somehow [Lucas] Bergvall, in my opinion this sums them up, look he’s walking, no sense is going off in his head – emergency danger and they score.”

Ange Postecoglou is running out of chances at Tottenham

A messy performance and the fall-out from the game has been less than ideal too.

Ange Postecoglou broke his promise to Tottenham’s players in the aftermath of the defeat when criticising Yves Bissouma, who did have a poor game.

And regardless of how much good will there is behind the manager’s long-term project, results haven’t dramatically improved since players have returned to fitness.

Eintracht Frankfurt won’t make for easy opposition in the Europa League at all after the international break.

And it seems as if injuries aren’t the only issue in N17 right now, a club bereft of confidence and direction on the pitch.
