Bayern is hanging on to hope that Spurs will activate the buy-on clause they have in his loan spell in North London.

Mathys Tel has been out on loan at Tottenham Hotspur ever since the end of the winter transfer window after it became clear that his prospects for minutes at Bayern Munich this season under Vincent Kompany were bleak at best. He was not getting regular minutes after he had made the decision to stay at the club and fight for his place when there was an opening for him to leave and go elsewhere last summer. The club was open to offers for him, but the youngster wanted to stay in Munich and prove himself, much to the admiration of the majority of Bayern fans.

Per information from Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern is remaining hopeful that Tottenham will exercise the option of the buy-on clause in Tel’s loan contract. The aforementioned clause was put into Tel’s loan deal with Tottenham so that they have the option to buy him for a fee of 60-million euros at the end of this season, knowing that the North London outfit has been hampered with attacking injury problems this season and that Bayern is going to look elsewhere for a winger/secondary striker.

Ideally, Bayern would like to use most of the funds generated from a potential Tel sale to invest in a Harry Kane backup, which is something they have been monitoring the transfer market for, even stretching back to last summer. There are a number of names they have internally on their list to be a Kane backup, but it’s felt that Tel cannot realistically be that option, though that could, in theory, wind up changing.

So far during his loan spell with Spurs, Tel has made a total of 6 appearances across all competitions, having tallied a lone goal in the process, which came in Tottenham’s 2-1 FA Cup loss to Aston Villa at the beginning of last month. There is still plenty of time for him to make more contributions, but Ange Postecoglou has been vocal about the fact that he never expected Tel to immediately hit the ground running when he came to North London, knowing that he would take time to adjust. He has time to make enough of an impression for Spurs to be interested in activating the buy-on clause at the conclusion of his loan spell.
