Michail Antonio has opened up on how he has reacted to his near-death car crash.

The West Ham striker crashed his Ferrari into a tree back in December.

Images of the crumpled car quickly circulated on social media showing the extent of the damage caused by the crash.

Fortunately, the 34-year-old survived despite suffering a broken leg.

Antonio was eventually released from hospital three weeks later to begin his road to recovery.

He has now revealed the key role therapy has played in his reaction to the crash.

The forward previously explained its importance following the death of his father and end of his previous marriage.

Antonio had admitted both life events had made it difficult for him to celebrate the Hammers’ Conference League triumph in 2023.

In an interview with the BBC, he was asked how he would have reacted to the crash if he had not been to therapy in the past.

The Jamaica international said: “I wouldn’t have processed it at all, or what I would have done would be to push it down and been angry or aggressive.

“Since the crash, I’ve been more emotional than I have ever been in my life, but I feel like it’s better.

“Therapy is one of the best things that’s happened to me in my life.”

Antonio also reiterated that he is eyeing a return to action once he has fully recovered from the crash.

Asked about making a comeback, he added: “Yes, 100 per cent. I will play again.”

Despite being out of contract in the summer, it is understood West Ham have the option to extend his deal by another year.

However, Antonio’s injuries from the crash have already ruled him out for the rest of the season.

He was able to make an emotional return to the London Stadium last week, though.

Ahead of his side’s clash with Newcastle, Antonio was presented to the supporters inside the stadium.

Since joining the Hammers in 2015, Antonio has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances for the club.

He is also West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 68 strikes in the competition.
