Eddie Howe’s name will eternally be heralded amongst different generations of Newcastle United supporters as he masterminded their 2-1 win against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Despite Liverpool looking dead set to retain the trophy after the blistering season they have had, it would be fair to state that Howe outclassed Arne Slot tactically.
Slot might have expected Newcastle to sit back and simply try hitting the Reds on the counter.
But Eddie Howe’s tactics were not as simplistic as the Dutchman may have assumed, as the eventual winners of the Carabao Cup took the game to Liverpool from minute one.
Newcastle were typically energetic throughout the contest and seemingly paid special attention to set-pieces as well — a ploy that worked to a tee as Dan Burn commented on Alexis Mac Allister’s marking being the ideal physical mismatch for him to capitalise upon.
But at half-time, Eddie Howe would have been wary of a potential comeback from Liverpool.

Burn’s goal in the 45th minute would have given the Newcastle dressing room a much-needed confidence boost. However, as the manager, Eddie Howe cannot ever afford to lose his cool.
The Athletic revealed that Howe showed his Newcastle players a slideshow during his half-time team talk against Liverpool.

The presentation consisted of Newcastle’s physical statistics from their games in the past two months — which showed a significant dip at the start of the second half.
With the evidence there for all the Newcastle players to witness, Eddie Howe implored his players to keep putting in the graft and they were rewarded with a historic win at Wembley Stadium.
Eddie Howe shared how Newcastle fooled Arne Slot
After Newcastle’s victory against Liverpool, Howe revealed that when both sides played the last time around in their 2-2 draw, the English manager changed his tactics around at the time not to show his side’s hand.
Eddie Howe told Sky Sports: “Yeah, I can say it now, we did. We didn’t want to show our hand, we didn’t want Liverpool to get a glimpse of us, so we changed everything.”
“Obviously, I didn’t tell the players that and we still wanted to win the game, we just wanted to do in a different way.”
Weeks of preparation both on and off the pitch has gone into Newcastle winning the Carabao Cup and Eddie Howe’s attention to detail proves why he is well and truly a top manager.
