Thierry Henry is not envisaging Liverpool‘s disappointing recent results having a knock-on effect on the Reds’ Premier League title chances.
Liverpool has just crashed out of two competitions in the space of six days, exiting the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain before a defeat by Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
When the domestic season resumes, Liverpool will have nine Premier League fixtures to play, and considering the Reds currently have a 12-point lead over Arsenal in second, Henry does not see them failing to get over the line.
Asked on CBS Sports if Liverpool could fail to win the league from the position it is currently in, Henry responded: “No, that’s just how it is when you’ve won more games.
“There’s 38 games, that’s how it is, you have to give them the credit to go 12 points ahead, let’s see what happens, but I don’t see it happening except if Liverpool implodes.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has consistently refused to concede defeat in the title race, and the Gunners chipped away at Liverpool’s lead in the standings on Sunday.
Mikel Merino’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium and Arteta said afterwards that all the Gunners can do is keep on winning.
“We have to win our football matches, that’s what it has to be,” Arteta told reporters. “Win against Fulham [in the next game], and we’ll be closer.”
Liverpool boss Slot, meanwhile, was asked whether Newcastle simply wanted to win the Carabao Cup more than Liverpool. He responded: “No, it’s 70 years since they last won a trophy, but that’s for the fans. Players have 15 years to play football and want to win every single trophy they are competing for. That’s also what we want. It’s a game that went just the way they wanted it to go.”
