Rust never sleeps…
According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Joshua Kimmich’s comments to Süddeutsche Zeitung earlier this week bothered some Bayern Munich officials:
Parts of Joshua Kimmich’s statements he made in his recent interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung after his contract extension caused anger among FC Bayern’s higher-ups. Two passages in the interview in particular are said to have irritated some of Bayern bosses:
1- Kimmich said about the contract offer that was withdrawn by the supervisory board: “As far as I’m concerned, the offer was never completely taken off the table.”
The decision to completely withdraw the offer was clearly communicated by the supervisory board to Max Eberl, who was tasked with informing Kimmich.
2- Kimmich stated that the two sides only “spoke about the financial framework at the very end.”
The club’s bosses disagree with that. Eberl had informed the supervisory board at the meeting on November 11, 2024, that negotiations would not be easy due to Kimmich’s financial demands. Kimmich had been informed by the club at the time that Bayern would like to reduce his salary in the event of an extension. But the player did not budge on this point during the talks at the time. However, it’s also true that the exact figures were discussed at the end of the negotiations
Despite the bosses’ irritation, the statements will have no consequences for Kimmich as the interview was authorized by the club beforehand.
This seems like nitpicking.
It was a long, arduous, and sometimes tense process, but — in the end — both sides seemed to get what they wanted. There was an overriding perception during the proceedings that Kimmich was having his way in the negotiations (mostly due to the feeling that he held leverage because he performed on the field and also because Kimmich was open about feeling unsupported under Thomas Tuchel — something executives probably could not dispute).
Regardless, it is all water under the bridge at this point and if either side harbors any ill-will, it would be wise to just let it go.
