Kimmich’s departure was a very real possibility, but he ended up renewing-not due to his wife, though.
Joshua Kimmich’s indecision over whether to stay at Bayern Munich or leave was serious. Though he did eventually sign a new deal that would theoretically tie him to the club until 2029, it took the Germany captain until the very end of his previous contract to sign that renewal. Ergo, Kimmich had a lot of time to consider his options and consult many people for advice.
One of those people was, naturally, his wife. Lina Kimmich has been married to Kimmich since 2018 and knows the hassle of negotiating contracts in professional sports, given her past as a volleyball player. However, she wanted to ensure the decision was Kimmich’s alone:
“We actually spoke a lot, but she didn’t make it any easier for me because she tried not to have any influence on me,” Kimmich admitted, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “She told me ‘you have to make the decision for yourself from a sporting perspective and we’ll be with you everywhere. You can count on us’ — that was important for me but didn’t make the decision any easier. In the end when I extended, she told me: ‘You did well, we already feel good here’.”
The ‘we’ in question, of course, is Lina and Joshua’s four children. The Kimmich family now seems set to stay in Munich for the next four years.
