Will the Bayern Munich midfielder get the nod?
Lothar Matthäus has seen enough of Bayern Munich this season to know that Leon Goretzka has pulled his career out of the dumps and triumphantly returned to playing a key role for the squad.
Now, Matthäus is ready to double-down and say that Goretzka should be starting for the German national team, too.
“Leon Goretzka is back in the German national team and, in my opinion, belongs in the starting eleven [against Italy]. I always thought what happened to him was incomprehensible, especially at Bayern. Now he’s back on top. That shows not only his footballing quality, but also his attitude and character,” Matthäus told Sky Sport (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). You can always rely on Leon, and I’m convinced he’ll deliver and perform well for the national team. The double pivot position is a natural fit for him. Robert Andrich is currently mostly on the bench for Leverkusen, so I’m more inclined to see Angelo Stiller alongside Goretzka.”
Goretzka has certainly made his case, but the competition will be tight among himself, Stiller, Andrich, and Pascal Groß. Julian Nagelsmann had shown a proclivity to using Andrich and Groß together, so it will be interesting to see how the coach sets up his central midfield.
