Real Madrid transfer news: Luka Modric ‘makes decision’ on future

3 Min Read

Luka Modric has reportedly decided whether he intends to remain at Real Madrid past the end of the season.

Now in his 13th campaign at the Bernabeu, the Croatian superstar has already cemented his legacy at the club.

As well as making 579 appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions, Modric has won 28 pieces of silverware, including four La Liga titles and six Champions League trophies.

However, now at the age of 39, Modric is reaching the end of his playing days and it has been questionable whether his longevity at Real will extend into next season.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the veteran has already reached a decision over whether he wants to stay at the club.

What is Modric’s decision?

Romano says that Modric’s first-choice option is to stay at Real and sign a contract until the end of 2025-26. His current deal expires in the summer.

Modric is said to be eager to remain part of Carlo Ancelotti‘s squad, likely a consequence of his regular game time this season.

Despite his age, Modric has made 20 starts and 24 substitute outings in all competitions, 39 of those appearances coming in La Liga and the Champions League.

Although viewed as a squad member rather than a certain starter, Modric has still completed the 90 minutes in three La Liga games since the middle of February.

While that is partly a consequence of the game time of teammates needing to be managed due to injuries, it has allowed Modric to prove that he remains capable of playing at the highest level.

Any doubts from Ancelotti?

Last month, Ancelotti described Modric as a “gift for football”, emphasising his status at the club and the level of respect that he commands.

Ancelotti has also talked up Modric’s ability to cope with a demanding schedule, as well as the role that he plays behind the scenes with the younger members of the squad.

Even if Modric’s game time decreases in 2025-26, it is clear that Ancelotti is fully in favour of a renewal. An agreement is expected in due course.
