Want some cheese to go with that whine? Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has no time for the wealthy complainers

Karl-Heinze Rummenigge has no time for this…

If you want to get Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge fired up, just ask him what he thinks of footballers who complain about the rigorous schedule in today’s game.

“I think that players have trapped themselves, asking for more and more money. That money, in one way or another, must be earned by the clubs, by playing more games, which are required by the TV market,” said Rummenigge. “But if every year the players ask for more wages and the agents ask for money even to have a chat every now and then, which club is still able to earn money?”

The complexities of the finances for today’s game are never-ending. Do the players want more money? Yes. Do they want to play less games? Yes.

Therein lies the rub.

It is easy to see why someone like Rummenigge, who did not play in an era with world class standards for facilities, nutrition, medical care, and physical training, would have a “Suck it up, buttercup”-type attitude.

At some point, it does become too much — both with the number of games and with the ever-expanding world of player salaries. It is doubtful, though, that there will ever be a solution that works for both the owners and players alike.
