Andy Robertson reveals joke message sent to Liverpool legend – ‘I’m coming for you’

Andy Robertson has revealed he jokingly warned Sir Kenny Dalglish that hopes to take his record as the most capped Scotland player in the coming years.

The Liverpool left-back is expected to make his 81st senior international appearance on Thursday in Greece during the country’s Nations League play-off first leg. That would see Robertson sit third on the list behind Jim Leighton and Dalglish, with the latter earning 102 caps during his sparkling playing career.

Robertson isn’t denying that becoming Scotland’s record appearance maker is an accolade he is aiming for. “I actually said to Kenny the other week, ‘I’m coming for you’,” Robertson told BBC Scotland earlier this week. “His reply was that plenty of players have said that to him before and he’s still the main man.

“I love playing for Scotland, showing up for every camp, and I want to get as many caps as I can,” he added. “Wherever that takes me, it takes me. I’m incredibly proud to get to 80.”

“You just deal with what’s in front of you. There’s so much going on, you can’t look too far ahead. You need a bit of luck with injuries but I do everything I can to make sure I’m in the best possible shape for Liverpool and Scotland.”

Scotland faces Greece in a two-legged play-off over the next week with the winner set to play in competition’s top tier when it resumes in September 2026. The Scots finished third in a group containing Portugal, Croatia and Poland last year, while Greece finished second behind England in its League B group.

After the Greece clashes, attention will turn to the World Cup qualifiers with Robertson and co in a group that again contains Greece, along with Belarus, Liechtenstein and an unconfirmed fifth side.

“You look at the group and think ‘can we compete?’ Yes, that’s a definite, but it’s going to be tough,” said Robertson. “Hopefully, we have everyone fit and we can give it a right good shot. Playing at a World Cup would be the ultimate.”

On the Greece play-off, he added: “They’re a really good team at home and don’t concede many goals. It will be difficult but we believe we can give anyone a game.”

The Scotland captain has played 39 games for Liverpool this season but the Reds continue to be linked with a move for a new left-back this summer. A report in The Athletic claimed Milos Kerkez and Jorrel Hato are among the club’s targets.
