It has been more than 20 years since Ben Rothwell made his MMA debut. The 40-year old American took on Rob Shinkle at Freestyle Combat Challenge 3 and earned a first-round corner stoppage TKO win.
He eased past his opponents in his next three fights before going down to Tim Sylvia via. unanimous decision.
A seven-fight winning streak followed – all first-round finishes barring the seventh win. His win streak ended with a defeat against Mike Whitehead at SB 24: Return of the Heavyweights 2.
A two-fight winning streak followed before a TKO (retirement) defeat against Ibragim Magomedov snapped the same.
By the end of March 2006, Rothwell was 20-5 in his MMA career. That was when he moved to the then-popular International Fight League.
Rothwell ended with an undefeated record of 9-0 in IFL before moving to Affliction where he was knocked out by Andrei Arlovski.
On the 24th of October, 2009, Rothwell moved to the UFC. He made his debut at UFC 104, against Cain Velasquez. He was knocked out in the second round. Not the start he wanted.
Rothwell earned his first UFC win against Gilbert Yvel at UFC 115. Following a 1-2 record after that, he bounced back with four successive wins, that included a TKO win over Alistair Overeem.
A three-fight skid followed after that. Rothwell bounced back with back-to-back wins over Stefan Struve and Ovince Saint Preux.
In 2025, Ben Rothwell won the BKFC Heavyweight Championship against champion Mick Terrill at BKFC Knucklemania V.
