The goalkeeper battle is underway…
On Tuesday, we found out that former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann was going to start Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann over VfB Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel — at least according to a report from Bild.
Nübel, of course, is on loan at VfB Stuttgart from Bayern Munich and has had quite the star-crossed career. After arriving in Bavaria from Schalke 04, Nübel has not been able to convince anyone at Bayern Munich that he is ready or able to eventually replace Manuel Neuer.
Given that, he has spent multiple seasons on loan where he has had periods of success littered with other periods of inconsistent play. Last season, Nübel was very solid for Stuttgart, but this campaign has not been as kind to the 28-year-old.
Still, Baumann, who is a wily veteran at 34-years-old, has been good, but not necessarily great for Hoffenheim this season.
Is Nagelsmann making the right call to go with the experience of Baumann over the potential of Nübel for the UEFA Nations league quarterfinal tie against Italy?
