Playing is smart in Bavaria…

According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany might have learned a thing or two from the failures of his predecessors.

Was the lesson to not take a very public ski trip in March when you are on the hot seat?

No, that is probably just common sense.

How about don’t hang your players out to dry in the media and behind the scenes?

No, that is definitely just common sense in today’s game.

What Kompany did learn from the mistakes of the last two coaches was to avoid warring with his players or supervisory board members in the media, and also to put in the necessary time at the complex:

Vincent Kompany deliberately avoids responding to statements made by the supervisory board. The Belgian has none of the higher-ups against him. With Tuchel, the public ‘exchange of blows’ with Uli Hoeneß even escalated to the point where a discussion between the coach and the supervisory board was necessary.

In Nagelsmann’s case, his work ethic was questioned by the club’s bosses. Especially in the months leading up to his dismissal in March 2023, there was internal criticism that Nagelsmann no longer stayed on the training ground as long after training sessions as he had at the beginning of his tenure. With Kompany, Hoeneß is repeatedly praising that work is finally being done again at Säbener Straße.

It does not seem that complicated, but grinding through hours at Säbener Straße is showing everyone else in the organization what the standard for hard work is. In addition, the “my name is Paul and that’s between y’all” attitude when dealing with comments from the supervisory board is another smart tactic to avoid unnecessary conflict and fights that Kompany simply could never win.

While his success on the field has been great, his aptitude for how to navigate his way through the treacherous waters of the club might be even more impressive.
