According to Nacion Futbol, Chelsea could be attempting signing West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez in the summer transfer window. The former club wanted to sign the player a few years back but couldn’t get a deal through.
Edson Alvarez is decently good
Edson Alvarez came into the limelight during his stint at Ajax and made a switch to West Ham United in the summer of 2023. Since then, he has been a decent performer and is an integral part of Graham Potter’s squad.
Alvarez has been a bit inconsistent this season apart from his team’s struggles. He has one assist in 26 games so far. He is averaging 2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 1.5 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Mexican midfielder is better known for his defensive traits in the middle of the park. He has the ability to control the tempo of the game and retain possession. He is strong in aerial duels and likes to shoot from a range whenever possible.
Is Edson Alvarez good enough for Chelsea?
Chelsea wanted to sign Edson Alvarez before he moved to West Ham United. However, they might make a move for him again in the summer. However, they will need to offer a lucrative offer since the player is a key member of the Hammers’ squad.
From the Blues’ point of view, it’s strange that they want Alvarez at their disposal. The player has been a bit inconsistent and might struggle to make impact at Stamford Bridge. Though they are also chances that he might be able to do better around quality players.
Chelsea have a solid pairing of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the midfield. Hence, Alvarez might not find himself starting regularly even if he arrives. Moreover, he is already 28, which means he can’t be a long-term solution for the club.
