Special occasions call for special kits.
A few weeks after Bayern Munich released their extremely popular 125th anniversary kits, the Germany national team followed suit with a 125th anniversary kit of their own.
For the occasion, adidas football released a short film about the release. In the film, Florian Wirtz and Jule Brand (not to be confused with Julian Brandt) visit the adidas headquarters for the new jersey. The man at the front desk turns out to be none other than Rudi Völler, who then telephones the people in the factory. Who should pick up the phone other than the one and only Thomas Müller? Müller orders the amalgamation of a series of legendary Germany shirts, including World Cup and Euro winning shirts, and the Olympics in the Frauen’s case as well. Finally, the crowning jewels are added to the mix – Gerd Müller and Franz Beckenbauer’s shirts. Oh, and Manuel Neuer also pokes his head in and asks for attention.
The result is a jersey that looks awfully similar to the 1974 World Cup winning shirt, a stark white background with black trim and not much else. A retro DFB logo is surrounded by a large, faded out federal eagle. Germany will wear these jerseys when they take on Italy in the Nations League quarterfinals.
Bayern’s campaign for their 125th anniversary kit was no less legendary. It pulled out all the stops for a photoshoot featuring the club’s biggest names, such as Sepp Maier, Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Paul Breitner, Stefan Effenberg, Franz “Bulle” Roth, Giovane Élber, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribéry, Arjen Robben. and of course, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller. Even the Bomber and Kaiser made an honorary appearance through a photo.
It is great to see the greats of club and country coming together for such a momentous occasion, and there is no better way to celebrate 125 years of success and glory. Long may it continue.
