There aren’t many more infamous figures in Liverpool’s history than Loris Karius.
Indeed, Loris Karius will live forever in the memory of Liverpool fans, for all the wrong reasons.
Back in 2018, Karius lined up for the Champions League final against Real Madrid in Kyiv, and, during that game, he made two high-profile errors.
Karius would never play for Liverpool again, and ultimately, the German’s career has gone off the rails since that game.
Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards has been discussing Karius’ mistakes against Real Madrid.
Karius and Richards actually came through at Manchester City together, and the pundit says that he actually sent the goalkeeper a message after that game.

Micah Richards’ message to Loris Karius
Richards shared what he text the Liverpool goalkeeper after the 2018 cup final.
The pundit told Karius to keep his head up after the game, but, unfortunately, the damage was done as the German was said to be distraught after this match.
“Karius, he came through the youth at Man City with me actually, he’s a couple of years younger than me. I just text him saying keep your head up, I text him yeah. He was distraught. He was better than that. There were two mistakes weren’t they? One where it went through his hands and one where he rolled it to Benzema,” Richards said.
Loris Karius stats for Liverpool
Loris Karius will always be remembered for those errors against Real Madrid, but, overall, he was a decent goalkeeper for Liverpool.
Indeed, Karius received a lot of praise for his performances for Liverpool prior to that fateful final.
Interestingly, Karius’ stats for Liverpool are incredible. Remarkably, he actually has a better clean sheet percentage than Alisson Becker.
Alisson Becker stats for Liverpool | Loris Karius stats for Liverpool | |
---|---|---|
Games | 49 | |
258 | Goals conceded | 47 |
126 | Clean sheets | 22 |
0.89 | Goals conceded per game | 0.96 |
42% | Clean sheet percentage | 45% |
In another world, Karius could have continued to be Liverpool’s number one for years to come, but, sadly, his confidence was destroyed by this performance, and he’s never recovered.
Karius would eventually join Newcastle United, but he barely got a sniff of a chance at St James’ Park as he was relegated to being the third-choice goalkeeper on Tyneside.
Karius’ career has ultimately been defined by that one game and those two mistakes, but, before those incidents, the German was actually a solid goalkeeper.
