Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are just three of the clubs that have been linked with Florian Wirtz in recent months.
All three Premier League giants are likely to have a busy summer on the transfer front as they look to build on their respective squads after mixed seasons.
Arsenal will want to improve after falling 12 points behind in the Premier League title race, while Liverpool will want more strength in depth to handle all competitions.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will be eager to get back to the levels of the past few years after stumbling this season, and their rebuilding job already under way.
And according to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Arsenal, Liverpool and City are all long-term admirers of Wirtz and have long been in contact with his camp.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on the Germany international, including the proposition Bayer Leverkusen have made him and when he could make a decision on his future.
Fabrizio Romano expects April to be ‘important’ for Florian Wirtz ahead of final decision
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, began by saying Leverkusen are working to tie Wirtz down to a new contract with a release clause which kicks in after the 2026 World Cup.
The transfer insider said: “Basically what Leverkusen are telling Wirtz is: ‘Sign the deal today, get a better salary, and from summer 2026, you will have a release clause in excess of €100m to potentially leave the club and try a new chapter’.”
Romano then spoke of several Premier League clubs being interested in Wirtz, though he did not name any, and reiterated that Bayern Munich are very keen on him.
“For Bayern he is a dream target,” he said.” All people at the club agree that it would be fantastic to have [Jamal] Musiala and Wirtz together for a new era of Bayern.”
Romano then suggested that Wirtz could finally make a decision on his future around April time, after mulling it over during the international break.
“Remember that Wirtz will not be part of the German national team in this break because he’s injured,” said Romano.
“Wirtz will use this time and these weeks to discuss with his father, to discuss with Leverkusen and then to make a final decision on what he wants to do in terms of a new contract.
“In general, the Wirtz situation, I think in April will have an important moment to try and make some decisions.
“Then obviously the final green light, the final decision is up to the player. But pressure from clubs is coming. Leverkusen want to discuss this contract situation as soon as possible.”
What Florian Wirtz could bring to the Premier League
Wirtz has made a name for himself as one of the best midfielders in world football and, at just 21 years of age, chances are he’s just getting started.
He is closing in on 200 competitive appearances for Leverkusen and has registered 56 goals and 63 assists for his club.
Wirtz has also won 29 caps for Germany, with 13 goal contributions to his name already.
Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes | |
Bayer Leverkusen | 191 | 56 | 63 | 13.847′ |
Germany | 29 | 6 | 7 | 1.551′ |
Wirtz has been compared to Phil Foden by Premier League legend Mark Schwarzer due to being similarly “dynamic” and “elegant.”
Meanwhile, former Bayer Leverkusen and Germany striker Patrick Helmes believes Wirtz is “probably the best midfielder in the world”, as per Goal.com.
