John Terry was a player who set the standards at Chelsea for almost two decades.
Indeed, Terry was a no-nonsense leader at Stamford Bridge, and he didn’t suffer any fools, particularly in the dugout.
Terry and co got Andre Villas-Boas sacked because they weren’t happy with him at Chelsea, and if a manager wanted to be successful at Stamford Bridge, they had to get the captain on side.
Jose Mourinho was the most successful manager in Chelsea’s recent history, and according to John Terry, Mourinho made an incredible impression on day one as manager.

What Jose Mourinho did on day one at Chelsea
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Terry spoke about Mourinho’s arrival at Chelsea back in 2004.
The centre-back says that Mourinho was incredible from day one, and he was impressed immediately by the fact that Mourinho was at the training ground so early setting the pitch up for the day ahead.
“It was incredible day to day. When he first arrived, the level of detail, and training. I used to pride myself on getting in early. I’d get there at about quarter past eight. But I got there and he was already out there setting up the cones on the pitch, setting up the pitch,” Terry said.
“That was his standards every single day, his standards were incredible. His details in the pre-match and the tactics of the opposition and how to break teams down. He understood we had a great group of players. A phenomenal manager and a phenomenal person.”

Terry was Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenant at Chelsea, and it’s clear to see that these two got on like a house on fire.
Unfortunately, the managers that would follow Mourinho never quite had the same effect.
Carlo Ancelotti was a brilliant manager for Chelsea, but the likes of Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Andre Villas-Boas couldn’t really recreate the success or the magic that Mourinho did at Stamford Bridge.
