Mason Greenwood ‘could be axed’ by Marseille after one season as French reporter makes shock transfer claim

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood could reportedly ‘leave’ Marseille this summer, according to reports from a French journalist.

Greenwood, 23, joined the Ligue 1 side from Man United for a reported fee of £26.6m (€31.6m) in the summer of 2024.

Since he arrived in Southern France, he has registered 16 goals and three assists in 28 games for Roberto De Zerbi’s team, helping his side to second in the French top flight – although they trail PSG by 19 points.

De Zerbi, 45, left Greenwood on the bench when his side lost 1-0 at home to Lens on March 8 and later claimed he had to “do more” if he wants to become a “champion”.

The striker was also named as a substitute during last weekend’s 3-1 defeat against PSG at Parc des Princes.

Greenwood was introduced in the second half but failed to make a positive impact. After the game, Di Zerbi explained how the forward was “not in the right condition to play”.

“Mason is a crucial player for us,” De Zerbi explained after the defeat.

“But if I’m not mistaken, at the beginning of the season Dembele wasn’t in the starting XI. We need Mason, but he has to be in good physical condition. It’s very important at this point in the season.”

And this was not the first time the Italian has challenged Greenwood.

“No one can have more respect for him (Greenwood) than I do,” said De Zerbi earlier in March.

“But that doesn’t change anything: I expect more from him. He has to do more because what he is currently showing is not enough.

“If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined.”

The 23-year-old is contracted to the French side until the summer of 2029 but could move on this summer according to RMC Sport journalist Florent Germain.

“He is a player that can make a big difference but honestly, if he doesn’t react, questions will be asked about a departure for Greenwood this summer,” said Germain via BFM Marseille.

“If he isn’t able to understand that his manager and his directors fought against a risk – more than a sporting risk – in bringing him, to give him a visibility, because OM isn’t Getafe.”
