According to Fichajes, Barcelona are one of the top clubs that are interested in signing Atletico Madrid star performer Julian Alvarez. However, a swap deal is more likely to happen rather than an all-cash signing given the high value of the player.
Julian Alvarez is doing exceptionally well
Julian Alvarez joined Manchester City in the summer of 2022 from River Plate before moving to Atletico Madrid last summer. In just two years, he did manage to establish himself and win possibly everything at both the club and the international level.
Alvarez is putting his strong foot forward this season as he has already netted 23 goals across 44 games apart from five assists. He is averaging 1.9 shots, 0.9 key passes, and 0.9 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Argentine primarily plays as a striker but can also feature as a left winger. He is a good carrier of the ball with great link-up abilities. He likes to attack directly towards the goal and is a clinical finisher around the penalty box.
A swap deal is a possibility
Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez is understandable as they need a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The latter is already 36 and is in the twilight of his career. Hence, the club is looking to solve the problem for a long period.
In that sense, Alvarez could be an ideal choice given his proven abilities and high quality. He would fit in well in Hansi Flick’s system and will surely enjoy his time. However, one needs to be aware of the high value that the player has in the market.
Atletico Madrid brought him from the English champions for a deal worth around €95 million. As the 25-year-old is an integral part of the project, they are unlikely to let him go. Given the financial crisis of Barcelona, an all-cash deal is almost impossible. However, they may try to convince their rivals with a swap deal offering the likes of Gavi and Ferran Torres.
