Exclusive: Nottingham Forest ready to potentially break their transfer record to sign £63m Arsenal target

4 Min Read

TBR Football understands that Nottingham Forest are ready to push hard and compete for Matheus Cunha’s signature this summer.

Matheus Cunha has been brilliant for Wolves this term in what has been an underwhelming campaign for the Midlands club.

Wolves have struggled this season, but Cunha has been a shining light – attracting interest from a number of top clubs.

Arsenal have been linked to Cunha, while Manchester United have looked at Cunha as well.

However, with Nottingham Forest potentially on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League, the Reds are looking to be ambitious and are plotting a move for Cunha.

Nottingham Forest plotting Matheus Cunha move

Nottingham Forest are ready to make a real push to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer, according to TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey.

Cunha is set to leave Wolves this summer despite signing a new contract earlier this season.

The former Atletico Madrid star penned a new deal in February after Forest made enquiries about a possible January deal.

Cunha’s new deal included a release clause worth just over £60million and that sets the price for a potential deal.

Cunha’s release clause has been reported as £63m by some.

A deal around that figure would see Forest break the club record they set last summer when they paid around £35million for Elliot Anderson.

The lines of communication with Forest and Cunha’s camp have remained open and they are not being discouraged from pursuing the interest.

Forest, though, are aware that other clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool. Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham hold an interest in the 25-year-old.

Cunha does have interest from the Saudi Pro League – but we are told his preference is to remain in Europe at this point.

Nottingham Forest’s Brazilian stable

Nottingham Forest may not be the biggest club currently in for Matheus Cunha, but this is a move that could make a lot of sense on a personal level.

Indeed, Cunha would be able to settle in very easily if he joined Forest.

Forest are another Midlands club, so Cunha may not even have to relocate, and it would be very easy for Cunha to settle in at Forest.

Indeed, Forest have a decent cohort of Brazilian players already, and Cunha does already know Danilo having been a part of the same Brazil squad back in 2022.

Meanwhile, aside from the Brazilians, Forest have a number of players who who are from Lusophone nations, as well as the manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

If Champions League football is on offer at the City Ground next season, Nottingham Forest may well be an appealing destination for the Wolves star.
