The Bayern Munich midfielder made a big impact in his first game back in the fold for Die Mannschaft.
How’s that for a remontada?
Leon Goretzka marked his German men’s national team return in style, scoring the winning goal in Milan in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League quarter-finals first leg victory for Germany over Italy.
“It definitely feels nice to be back,” Goretzka said after the game (via DasErste, as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I’m very happy to have played here today. Of course it wasn’t easy to be away from the national team, but I want to look ahead and not to the past. It’s a nice story that I scored a goal today. I thought we played well, we were better than the opponent even in the first half although we conceded. In the second half, we were more present in the box. The team showed desire, that’s what they did well in the past few months. The fans feel that we want to win.”
The Bayern Munich midfielder reunited with his old club manager, Julian Nagelsmann, who had passed him up last summer at the EUROs but lavished praise on him tonight.
“I’m very happy for him. I thought he played a great game, especially in the second half, both defensively and with his presence in the box. He influenced the game in both ways. It was a top performance,” Nagelsmann said (also via @iMiaSanMia).
