The winger is one of three high-profile players who could walk away for free when their current deals expire at the end of the season, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

Salah has repeatedly said this will be his final season at Liverpool, although many have taken that to mean as things currently stand he won’t be at the Reds for the 2025/26 campaign. A lucrative move to Saudi Arabia has been repeatedly mentioned in the plethora of reports and rumours, along with possible interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

But according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the most likely outcome as things stand is Salah staying at Anfield into next season. Writing in a live Q&A on The Athletic, he explained that at the moment there’s no real update to give on the forward, though that could change at any time.

He claimed that at the moment, it seems the two parties are going back and forth ironing out the details of a deal – which is expected to be a two-year deal.

That contract running for two years is not unexpected, but provides Liverpool with the chance to long-term plan in the right wing position. If he were to simply sign a 12-month extension, the issue of replacing him would just be kicked down the road to January, when selling teams would know they had Liverpool over a barrel.

Now, however, the Reds have the chance to identify a younger target and enjoy the rest of Salah’s prime.

That encouraging update will be a welcome relief for Liverpool fans following what has been a career-best season from Salah. He has managed 54 goal involvements so far this term, 44 of which have come in the Premier League.

That is a record for an individual campaign and Salah has nine games to set the outright new record. He is also four assists away from a new Premier League record and needs 10 goals to break Erling Haaland’s record of 36 in a single season.
