Resilience on display in Milan.
Germany defeated Italy in Milan on Wednesday in a 2-1 come-from-behind road win. The display stands as a testament to the team’s never-say-die attitude under Julian Nagelsmann…but they certainly had to work for it.
Nagelsmann’s XI raised eyebrows when it came out before the match and continued doing so all the way through half-time. It is telling when one of the big praises of the coach after the match is how swiftly he corrected his own lineup — but that he did, with Tim Kleindienst coming on at striker in place of Jonathan Burkardt and Nico Schlotterbeck replacing David Raum at left-back.
The additional defender at the back and the target man for crosses at the front proved to be just the formula the second half called for, as Germany scored twice on crosses from Joshua Kimmich (one of them a corner).
