Newcastle United have been the richest club in the world for a little while now, but they’ve still had to be savvy with their transfer business.
Indeed, with the way financial fair play rules now work, Newcastle can’t just spend freely.
Newcastle have had to watch their finances recently, and, over the summer, Newcastle were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to balance their books.
Newcastle have had to spend their money wisely, often sniffing out high-quality, low budget options.
Kieran Trippier has been incredible for Newcastle as a servant, and he cost just £12m, while, speaking to We Are Tottenham TV, Harry Redknapp has hailed the signing of Dan Burn from Brighton.
Harry Redknapp hails Dan Burn signing
Redknapp spoke about Newcastle’s transfer business in recent years, claiming that Eddie Howe is the only manager who would have signed Dan Burn.
Burn wasn’t necessarily shining at Brighton, but Howe saw some value in bringing in a boyhood Newcastle fan with plenty of Premier League experience, and that has paid dividends.
“He’s made some great signings, when you look back, only someone like Eddie Howe would’ve signed Dan Burn. Nobody would’ve signed Dan Burn for Newcastle, but Eddie took him,” Redknapp said.
“Trippier, a fantastic player, a competitor, you know, people like tha, only an English manager would’ve signed them.”
Dan Burn stats for Newcastle
Dan Burn isn’t necessarily the type of player you’d expect Newcastle to go after upon becoming the world’s richest club.
Indeed, Burn wasn’t a glamorous name, if anything, he was a bit of a comic relief character – after all, he was a 6 ft 8 left-back at Brighton.
However, Burn has turned out to be one of Newcastle’s very best signings, and he’s turned up in the big moments.
Burn scored in last week’s cup final for Newcastle, while he also scored a big goal against PSG last year too.
Burn’s record for Newcastle is exceptional.
Dan Burn record for Newcastle | |
---|---|
Games | 139 |
Wins | 77 |
Draws | 27 |
Losses | 35 |
Burn has been one of the best signings Newcastle have made in this post-takeover era, and, as Redknapp says, there aren’t many managers who would’ve taken a chance on a player like Burn.
