David Ornstein reveals exactly how much Chelsea need to pay Man Utd to get out of obligation to buy Jadon Sancho

Sancho is currently on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge.

An interesting development has emerged regarding Jadon Sancho’s loan move from Manchester United to Chelsea – and it has become a major talking point on social media.

Sancho was the final player to leave Old Trafford during last summer’s transfer window as he joined the ranks at Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan, which featured an obligation to buy for up to £25 million.

The winger, who was memorably banished from first-team training at United after responding to Erik ten Hag’s statement about his below-par performances in training, enjoyed a bright start to life at Chelsea.

In fact, after notching eight goal contributions in 11 games under Enzo Maresca, many assumed he would continue to flourish at the London-based club.

But Sancho has struggled of late, with his output of two goals in 23 Premier League games raising doubts over whether he will feature heavily for Maresca in the final weeks of the campaign.

Amid his uncertain future, David Ornstein of The Athletic has delivered a staggering update regarding his future.

After noting that a deal for Sancho included an obligation to buy for up to £25 million, Ornstein suggests it was decided that Chelsea could opt against proceeding with the full transfer by giving Manchester United a set fee of just £5 million.

Here’s how fans on social media have reacted to the news.

One said: “The first player in history for whom a club has backed out of an OBLIGATION to buy. Rough. Says it all though. Ten Hag was always in the right. This is a win-win for United, anyhoo. Can either get him gone for £25m or it’s a cracking payday for a loan and can offload him again.”

A second wrote: “That’s not much of a fee is it,” while a third commented: “I’ve never heard of a club being able to wiggle their way out of an obligation to buy purchase.”

A fourth said: “Nowhere near as much as expected. If Sancho doesn’t improve his form it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Chelsea sent him back,” and a fifth added: “How is the opt out fee so low?”
