A surprise and scarcely believable report linking Harry Kane with a return to Liverpool has emerged in Spain. Barcelona-based outlet El Nacional reports that Kane is keen to finish his career in England, and that the Reds have emerged as the favorites to secure his services.
Liverpool is set to be in the market for a new striker during the summer transfer window, with Darwin Nunez likely to be replaced after three underwhelming seasons at Anfield.
Kane would be a surprise choice as a replacement for Nunez, but he would no doubt provide plenty of quality. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised the England captain ahead of a game between Liverpool and Tottenham in 2022.
“The main challenge is the quality of the opponent,” Klopp said of Tottenham three years ago. “I mean, you think about how Tottenham wins the games, of course they have a brilliant football team.
“But the way they set it up with the five and then offensively and defensively with the four and one, or with the two and three. Up front, (they have) speed like crazy – Harry Kane, what a player, and obviously fits in that idea extremely well.
“There’s a blind understanding between them, so I’d say it’s probably the biggest challenge for protection we face for a long time.”
There are a number of reasons why the report should be taken with a shovel of salt, but the main ones are Kane’s age and the transfer fee he would command.
Liverpool may have to cut its cloth accordingly this summer considering three key players could be about to leave the club on free transfers, while the Reds’ transfer policy generally stops them from moving for players of Kane’s age (he will be 32 when next season starts).
Liverpool prefers to sign players who are in their early to mid-20s, and players who are in their late 20s and 30s are only generally recruited in special circumstances or if there is a bargain to be had. Kane’s contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027, and his goal-scoring record for Bayern — he has scored 76 times in 82 appearances since joining the club last summer — means he would command a huge fee.
