He was great against Italy…

Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann might be a known quantity in Germany, but to the rest of Europe, the 34-year-old still might be an unknown.

Slowly, though, they might just get to know him — especially if he keeps turning in performances like he did on Thursday during Germany’s 2-1 win over Italy.

For Baumann, he just wants a chance to compete for a World Cup berth and maybe a chance at the starting job.

“I’ve always accepted every role, whether supporting Marc (André ter Stegen) or Manu (Neuer) as number 3 or now as number 1. I’m grateful to be able to help the team. I’ve definitely got a taste for playing. But the World Cup is still far too far away. I’ll stay true to my principles and simply want to help the team. If I can do that, my job will be done. I don’t want to look too far ahead, but as I’ve said many times, I’m proud and very grateful to be able to play,” said Baumann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Baumann is making his case, but will it be enough? We shall see…
