A testament to just how talented Lucas Bergvall is that clubs of the ilk of Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona were battling for his signature.

However, Bergvall rejected Barcelona for Tottenham and he has certainly impressed during his debut season in the Premier League. The Swedish international has earned rave reviews for his displays, with Harry Redknapp describing Bergvall’s showings as “excellent” as well.

The 19-year-old has not shied away from the daunting responsibility of becoming an instantly important player under Ange Postecoglou, instead embracing the chance of regularly competing at the highest level.

At Barcelona, the teenager might not have been a consistent starter due to the caliber of their midfield department — with Hansi Flick having options galore to choose from such as Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Dani Olmo and Marc Casado.

The same cannot be said about Lucas Bergvall in N17, who has perhaps been given more of a look-in than initially expected due to how disappointing Spurs have been this season.

Barcelona were “very disappointed” after Lucas Bergvall joined Tottenham

One could argue that Bergvall might have made the incorrect decision of choosing Tottenham over Barcelona when leaving Djurgardens as the Spanish giants are in contention to win the treble. Meanwhile, the Lilywhites could finish in the bottom half of the Premier League this campaign.

But Bergvall is developing excellently at Tottenham and he has plenty of time left in his career to win trophies.

For now, a young player like must play regular football and hone his craft, which the silky technician is certainly doing and as Glenn Hoddle claimed, Bergvall “looks really good”.

Djurgardens sporting director Bjorn Gustafsson said on SVT that when Bergvall did decide to sign for Tottenham over Barcelona, the Spanish giants were gutted:

“Lucas is an interesting and talented footballer. We had the privilege of discussing the move with one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Barcelona, who were interested.”

“I think Barcelona was quite surprised, because you don’t go to Barcelona just to look, you go there to have tapas and see if it’s nice. I think they were very disappointed that he chose Tottenham. But the decision itself was the right one because [Bergvall] has become an established Premier League player. All the coaches and everyone talks about him as a fantastic player, and he’s just turned 19.”

However, Bergvall explained why he snubbed Barcelona for Tottenham and there were three reasons behind his decision.

  • Tottenham’s exciting brand of football
  • Playing under Ange Postecoglou
  • Tottenham’s project

Bergvall said: “We were eating in the mountains with Deco, we looked outside and there were 150 people trying to get in. We got into a taxi, drove into the city and they were following us. We got into a garage and switched cars.”

“It was a crazy day. I came home and needed to decide, but my gut feeling was always Tottenham.”

“They play really good football and it’s fun to watch. Ange is doing a great job. When you’re looking at the team, you feel like they’re going to new areas and are starting to build something.”
