The prediction Jimmy Greaves made about Harry Kane at Tottenham in 2015 that was spot on

Before he left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich in 2023, Harry Kane was able to break the late Jimmy Greaves’ remarkable goalscoring record at the club.

In total, Greaves managed to score 266 goals in 379 appearances for Tottenham – a true club legend who will always be etched into the club’s history books.

But after surpassing the likes of Martin Chivers and Bobby Smith in the process, Kane went on to score 280 goals for Spurs, a figure he might even have plans to add to in the future.

Kane isn’t keen to rejoin Tottenham just yet – he’s still got a lot to achieve at Bayern, but there certainly seems to be a path for the England captain to one day return to N17.

Jimmy Greaves’ brilliant assessment of Harry Kane as a youngster

That being said, Jimmy Greaves made a stunningly accurate prediction about Kane when speaking to Sky Sports in 2015.

Kane had only just broken onto the first team scene at Spurs at the time, and yet Greaves still seemed convinced that the striker could reach legendary status in north London.

Discussing Kane’s future, Greaves said: “Harry looks a good player, he’s got to carry on obviously developing the way that he has.

“That gets hard because it’s difficult, he’s come on the scene and he’s sort of caught people out a little bit with the way that he plays and obviously his goalscoring prowess.

“And defenders learn very quickly so you have to sort of readjust, you have to keep thinking all of the time – how am I going to approach it? You can’t play the same way all the time, you’ve got to actually order your own game and your own way of looking at it.

“But he’s a sensible enough bloke and to be fair, all this umming and ahhing and possibility of him playing for England – put him in, I can’t understand what the argument is about, it’s not as though we’ve got [Luis] Suarez and [Sergio] Aguero up front – so shove him in, let him have a go.

“He’s an impressive player, everyone says is he the new goalscoring player that Spurs need? Is he the new me? Lineker? Klinsmann? And certainly he looks as though he’s got the ability and the temperament which is the important thing to combine those two.

“And I think he can do, yeah, definitely.”

Kane’s goal record compared to Tottenham’s all-time greats

As mentioned, Kane surpassed the likes of Chivers and Smith on his way to being Greaves’ brilliant record.

However, the now Bayern striker wasn’t able to eclipse Greaves’ goal rate at least, which remains the best of Spurs’ top five of all-time.

Games Goals Goals per match
Harry Kane 435 280 0.64
Jimmy Greaves 379 266 0.70
Bobby Smith 317 208 0.66
Martin Chivers 367 174 0.47
Son Heung-min 448 173 0.38
Tottenham’s all time top-scorers in all competitions

Of course, Son Heung-min also deserves credit for his remarkable achievement of making it on that list, especially given that he doesn’t often play as the number nine,

It remains to be seen how many more goals Son will add to that record – perhaps he is hoping to move up one or two more places before he one day departs N17.

Five excellent goalscorers, and Greaves really was spot on with his assessment of Kane when he was still fresh on the scene.
