Liverpool is likely to be in the market for a new striker this summer, with all the signs pointing towards Darwin Nunez leaving the club. Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica for a huge fee three years ago but has not hit the heights expected of him, averaging fewer than a goal every three games and failing to establish himself as a first-team regular.
The Uruguayan was clearly more fancied by Jurgen Klopp than he is by Arne Slot, who is likely to look to sell him this summer and bring in a replacement who will hopefully prove to be a dependable source of goals.
As is always the case, Liverpool is being linked with a host of top names to replace Nunez, and we’re going to rank Alexander Isak, Harry Kane and Julian Alvarez — three top players who have been the subject of speculation linking them with a move to Anfield, with varying degrees of believability — from worst to best in terms of their suitability.
3. Harry Kane
Calling Harry Kane the worst signing feels wrong, considering his prolific goal-scoring record across his time at Tottenham and Bayern Munich, but his age counts against him here.
At 31 years old, he is six years older than both Isak and Alvarez, so one suspects he has fewer years left at the top level than the other two players. His resale value would be considerably lower, and considering his current deal at Bayern is due to expire in 2027, he would not exactly be cheap to sign in the first place.
He is more prolific than Isak and Alvarez, of that there is no doubt, but Liverpool tends to sign players who are in their low to mid-20s and signing Kane for a big fee just wouldn’t feel right.
1= Julian Alvarez, Alexander Isak
In truth, it’s a toss-up between these two players as to who would be the best signing for Liverpool, as both men are exceptional strikers who have shown over several years that they have what it takes to lead the line for big clubs at the highest level.
Alvarez was an important player for Manchester City for two seasons, and had he had anybody other than Erling Haaland for competition, he might well have still been there as Pep Guardiola’s first-choice striker. The all-action Argentine is the main man at Atletico Madrid now, where he has scored 23 times in 44 appearances.
Isak, meanwhile, has scored 58 times in 100 games for Newcastle, and his goal-to-game ratio has improved with each season that he has been with the Magpies, suggesting that the best might still be to come from the Sweden international. He would likely cost more than Alvarez, and that could be decisive if Liverpool has to operate on a tight budget this summer considering some key players could leave for nothing at the end of the campaign.
