Exclusive: Chelsea have begun talks to sign £50m attacker instead of Jadon Sancho

Chelsea have moved themselves into contention to sign Athletic Bilbao and Spain star Nico Williams, TBR Football can reveal.

Williams is one of the most wanted wingers in Europe right now, but the forward has previously been sceptical about leaving Spain.

A move to Barcelona would be the 22-year-old’s clear preference, where he would in theory link-up with good friend Lamine Yamal.

However, whilst Barcelona do hold an interest, a winger is not their top priority for the Catalan side this summer given the form of Raphinha – they also still have Ferran Torres as hugely capable back-up.

With that considered, Williams is open to a Premier League move this summer – a message that’s been heard loud and clear by the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

That being said, TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Chelsea have joined their Premier League rivals in the hunt for Williams. 

Chelsea are very much looking at their wide options – the Blues are considering not signing Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

In addition, Chelsea are ready to sell Noni Madueke this summer.

And when also considering Mykhaylo Mudryk’s suspension, there is room in Enzo Maresca’s squad for a new addition.

In terms of his numbers this season, Williams has scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 37 appearances for Athletic, a winger who proved his quality with Spain at the Euros last summer.

How would Nico Williams’ arrival affect Estevao and Kendry Paez?

Of course, South American starlets Estevao and Kendry Paez are due to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer – two incredibly exciting young talents.

But TBR understands that Maresca’s side are still in the market for a tried and tested star to immediately make an impact in wide areas.

As a result, Chelsea have engaged in talks with Williams’ entourage, who are now fully aware of the club’s interest.

Chelsea would have little concern about meeting William’s asking price which is just under £50m owing to a release clause in his contract.

However, the Spaniard’s personal demands are sizable given that the winger is already earning a substantial wage in La Liga.
