With just eight teams left in the Europa League, a possible final between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United is becoming more and more likely.
Given how the draw panned out, Tottenham and Man United would avoid each other until May’s final at the San Mames in Spain, should they advance that far in the competition.
The duo face Eintracht Frankfurt and Olympique Lyon in the next round respectively – two sides who will also be eyeing a trip to the Basque Country.
Of course, it’s worth noting that United might have to face Glasgow Rangers at the semi-final stage should both teams progress from their quarter-final ties.
And in terms of Spurs’ story, Tottenham might sack Ange Postecoglou if he doesn’t win the Europa League.
Teddy Sheringham says which English side needs to win the Europa League most
With that in mind, Teddy Sheringham was asked whether he thought Tottenham or United needed to win the competition more this season.
Sheringham was questioned on the matter after appearing in Spurs Legends vs AC Milan Glorie – a charity game that took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And whilst still standing in the ground, Sheringham decided that it was Spurs that needed the competition more out of his two old clubs.
He said: “Tottenham, without a doubt. Man United have won things over the last couple of years, I know things are not rosy at either football club.
“But Tottenham need to win it without a shadow of doubt and it would mean a lot more to them.
Sheringham was then asked if that was because of the Champions League qualification winning the competition would bring, or whether it was because of the actual trophy itself.
He replied: “Silverware – this club is in need of silverware. They get ridiculed year after year when other teams laugh at what the predictions are and what the expectancy is here.
“But you know, this is a massive football club and they need to get back amongst the silverware and I hope he does it.”
Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim’s records compared in the Europa League
In addition to Postecoglou at Celtic, Ruben Amorim also has previous experience in the Europa League with Sporting CP.
In fact, Amorim’s side actually knocked out Arsenal back in 2023, before they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Win % | |
Ange Postecoglou | 16 | 9 | 2 | 5 | 56 |
Ruben Amorim | 24 | 11 | 8 | 5 | 46 |
In his one campaign in the competition at Celtic, Postecoglou’s side failed to progress from the group stage, meaning the Spurs manager is in uncharted territory in terms of the Europa League at least.
And as mentioned, Amorim’s longest run was taking Sporting to their tie with Juventus in the last eight.
Both Tottenham and United are determined to prove that their projects are on the right track despite their difficulties right now, but ultimately only one of the two can win silverware this season.
