The 2026 World Cup keeps on growing as a CONMEBOL nation secured their participation to the competition to be held at USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to build as it becomes the first edition to be hosted by three different countries. With the USA, Canada, and Mexico preparing for the international event, a CONMEBOL nation has emerged as the first to secure a spot in the tournament.
Ahead of their clash against Brazil in Buenos Aires, Argentina has become the first CONMEBOL nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Lionel Messi’s side joins Japan, New Zealand, and Iran as the fourth non-host team to secure their ticket.
Sitting at the top of the table, Argentina dominated the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers, earning 28 points from 13 games, with 9 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses. After Bolivia failed to defeat Uruguay, the Albiceleste secured automatic qualification five games before the conclusion of the competition.
Now that qualification is secured, Argentina’s focus shifts to maintaining momentum and defending the World Cup trophy they claimed in 2022 in Qatar. The last time they were in this position as defending champions was in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where the team, led by Diego Maradona, was defeated in the final by Germany.
Beyond Brazil, Argentina’s remaining scheduled matches in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers are against Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Despite having secured their participation in the 2026 World Cup, both the team and coach Lionel Scaloni will aim to maximize their remaining games to prepare for a competitive squad.
Argentina’s desire to continue a winning streak
The 2026 World Cup is expected to be the final tournament for Messi and several other key players, such as Nicolas Otamendi. Furthermore, the retirement of legend Angel Di Maria from international duty marks a significant loss compared to the team that triumphed in Qatar. Nevertheless, Argentina remains in strong form.
Messi’s national team currently holds the World Cup, Copa America (having won the last two editions), and the Finalissima trophy, claimed in a victory over Italy. Argentina also sits at the top of the FIFA rankings. While other dominant teams like Spain, Germany, Brazil, France, and England continue to emerge, Argentina has solidified its status as one of the top contenders for the 2026 World Cup.
