Harry Kane has revealed what Reece James was doing in England training, which paid off big time with his ‘fantastic’ free-kick goal against Latvia.
England defeated Latvia 2-0 to make it two wins from two under Thomas Tuchel to make a perfect start to World Cup 2026 qualifying.
James and Eberechi Eze both found the back of the net for the first time in England colours, meanwhile, Kane entered the top 20 men’s international scorers with his 71st goal.
Speaking after the win, the former Tottenham Hotspur striker hailed James’ free kick goal, which opened the scoring for the Three Lions.
Harry Kane on Reece James’ ‘fantastic’ free-kick vs Latvia
Harry Kane claims that England players were watching Reece James shoot from free kicks during training the day before the win over Latvia.
The Chelsea defender presumably won the right to take free kicks against Latvia having impressed during the set-piece practice session on Sunday.
The Bayern Munich forward couldn’t believe the accuracy and power James managed to generate from his effort and hailed it as a ‘fantastic goal’.
Kane told ITV Sport: “The way Reece hits the ball has a lot of topspin. We were watching him shoot in training yesterday. To be fair, the ball was quite far out but I watched it back there and it had incredible precision, power and he just gets that lift on the ball. What a fantastic goal.”

It was quite a way to open his account as James found the back of the net from a free kick around 25 yards out from goal, which left Krisjanis Zviedris with little chance of getting anywhere close.
The Chelsea captain shares a great relationship with the new boss Tuchel from their time in West London together, and there is the hope that if he can stay fit, James could be a key man for the Three Lions.
