Germany World Cup champion addresses Thomas Tuchel’s main problem in England coach job

After coaching his first two games, a Germany World Cup champion discusses Thomas Tuchel’s main issue as England’s manager.

Thomas Tuchel‘s tenure as England’s national team manager began on a positive note, with two victories in his first official matches. As he aims to build a winning squad for the 2026 World Cup, a World Cup champion with Germany has pointed out a key challenge Tuchel will face in his new role with The Three Lions.

After Gareth Southgate’s resignation in June 2024, the Football Association (FA) appointed Tuchel as his successor. However, Tuchel’s official start date was in early 2025, with Lee Carsley stepping in as interim coach for the remainder of the previous year.

Tuchel was available as a free agent after spending one year and three months at Bayern Munich. He was one of the few managers to have won a major trophy—having secured the Champions League with Chelsea—and brought valuable experience from his time in England. However, a significant issue could arise now that he is managing the national team.

Tuchel and his tendency towards conflict

As highlighted by Germany’s World Cup champion Philipp Lahm in The Athletic, Tuchel’s tendency to rely on conflict as part of his managerial approach could become a turning point, both for him and the England players. Lahm referenced Tuchel’s previous stints at club level to support his argument.

“But it does not always go well for him and when it fails, it’s never because of tactics, but rather interpersonal relationships,” Lahm wrote, recalling Tuchel’s brief tenures at Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. “No matter where he works, tensions seem to arise at some point. Apart from Mainz (2009 to 2014), Tuchel has never stayed anywhere for three years,” he added.

Lahm also acknowledged Tuchel’s achievements, including his success at Borussia Dortmund, his UEFA Champions League final appearances with PSG, and the victory he secured with Chelsea in just four months. However, Lahm noted that England presents an entirely different context, which could lead to either a major achievement or a disastrous ending.

In a pre-match press conference ahead of England’s game against Latvia, star forward Harry Kane addressed the contrasts between Southgate and Tuchel, almost validating Lahm’s statement: “They’re totally different characters, in the way they are on the pitch and probably off it too. I had a great relationship with Gareth, we were similar in a lot of ways – quite quiet and understanding.

“Thomas brings a lot more energy and enthusiasm, already in the training sessions and meetings. He has a lot of passion when he’s talking,” Kane said about his new coach’s attitude, which could potentially become a problem, according to Lahm.

Tuchel’s era in England has just begun, and so far, he has secured two wins in two matches, scoring five goals and conceding none. Sharing a group in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers with Albania, Latvia, Andorra, and Serbia, Tuchel’s first major challenge will likely be the 2026 World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel, Head Coach of Bayern Munich, reacts during the Bundesliga match between 1. FC Köln and FC Bayern München at RheinEnergieStadion on May 27, 2023 in Cologne, Germany.

With a contract through the conclusion of the tournament, it remains to be seen whether Tuchel will endure another short-lived managerial stint or prove that his method can lead to sustained success.
