Thomas Tuchel has got off to the best possible start as England manager – two games, two wins.

There was an element of scepticism around the appointment of Tuchel for England. After all, he’d never managed at international level before and he has an association with Germany – England’s biggest international rivals.

There was plenty of chat before Tuchel got the job about an English manager replacing Gareth Southgate.

Graham Potter was linked with England, while Eddie Howe was also linked with the Three Lions post.

However, according to Sean Dyche, speaking to TalkSPORT, Eddie Howe never even had an interview for the England job, something which really shocked him.

Eddie Howe never had an England interview

Dyche spoke about Howe and the England job.

The former Everton boss says that he’s done some checks around this situation, and he’s discovered that Eddie Howe wasn’t even interviewed for the role.

Dyche says that England made a mistake in not speaking to the Newcastle manager, claiming that he should be prepared for any future opportunities.

“And there’s a lot of English managers, in my opinion, out there, very good. I mean, one thing I will remark on it, and I’ll say it openly, is I think this is right. I did sort of check in on this,” Dyche said.

“Eddie didn’t even have an interview for the England job. People go, yeah, but he wouldn’t have took it. I go, that’s not the point.

“That’s not the point. Sorry, get him in the system. Interview him now.

“Get him in the chain. Get him in the chain already. Imagine, right, it might not be for now for him, I mean, for his reasons, but imagine in a year and a half, if you’re monitoring and he’s now feeling different, you’ve already met him, you’ve already told him, you know, shown him the framework of English football.

“Give him an insight. Give some of these guys an insight. Obviously, you’re looking for a bit of discretion, a bit of privacy, but give some of these English guys an insight, so if they do flourish and they come through the system, you’ve got another English manager waiting to be the manager of the country.”

Eddie Howe compared to Thomas Tuchel

England didn’t interview Howe for the job this time around, but if they’d already had their heart set on Thomas Tuchel, it’s easy to understand why.

Indeed, as good a manager as Howe is, his CV doesn’t really stack up all that well against Tuchel’s.

106 Draws 141
146 Losses 251
59% Win percentage 45%
8 Major trophies won 1
2021 Champions League win Greatest managerial achievement 2025 Carabao Cup win

Tuchel has been there and done it on the grandest of stages, while Howe had never won a major trophy at the time the England job was up for grabs.

Of course, Howe has since won the Carabao Cup, but there’s a big difference between winning the League Cup and the Champions League.

Howe is a top manager, and the England job may well be his one day, but you can’t blame the FA too much for not taking the time to interview Howe when they knew that Tuchel was available and ready to take the job.
