Official: Germany’s World Cup qualifiers group is set

Germany’s road to the 2026 World Cup has, on paper, become somewhat simpler.

The Nations League is, at this point, a well known commodity that the average fan knows a lot about. But one thing about the competition some might not know is that it directly affects the World Cup qualification cycle. Germany could have landed in either World Cup qualifying Group A or Group I, but due to Sunday’s 3-3 draw against Italy and the resulting 5-4 aggregate victory over both legs in the Nations League quarterfinals, Germany are in Group A.

If Germany had lost the tie, the 2014 World Cup winners would have faced Norway, Israel, Estonia and Moldova in a 5-team group, similar to the qualification Germany had to undergo for the 2022 World Cup. Instead, as losers of the tie, Italy have now been placed in that group.
