The Canadian FA attempts to clear the air amidst allegations that they are not protecting their players.
The Bayern Munich injury crisis reached new heights as Alphonso Davies was injured while on national duty with the Canadian national team.
Despite being injured in the semifinal against Mexico, Davies played in the CONCACAF third place match against the United States. Further diagnostics undertaken after the match revealed an ACL tear, meaning he will be sidelined indefinitely. While it is not clear on whether Davies tore his ACL during the semis, it raised a lot of questions about the level and standard of care Canada Soccer provides to its players.
Davies’ agent Nedal Huoseh was quick to point out that Davies should have been appropriately sidelined and that Canada Soccer and manager Jesse Marsch should have known better,
In an attempt to clear all allegations against them, Canada Soccer released a statement, emphasising that they have always prioritised the safety and wellbeing of a player and that any speculations suggesting otherwise are not true:
We want to express our full support for our Men’s National Team captain, Alphonso Davies, as he recovers from this unfortunate injury. Phonzie’s strength and resilience matches his world-class talent, and we all look forward to fully supporting him during his recovery. Canada Soccer’s coaches and experienced medical staff are true professionals and have always prioritized player safety and wellbeing. Anything suggesting otherwise is untrue.
