There are some incredibly talented players coming out of Scandinavia right now.
Erling Haaland is arguably the best striker in the world, Martin Odegaaard is a world-class player, while Lucas Bergvall has been shining for Spurs this season.
Meanwhile, Sverre Nypan is being linked with a move to Arsenal, and he’s not the only young Scandinavian being linked with a move to north London.
According to Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Tottenham Hotspur are among the teams who are looking at FC Copenhagen’s Roony Bardghji.
Bardghji has been linked with top clubs in the past, but an injury has hampered his development in recent times.
Tottenham among clubs interested in Roony Bardghji
According to Jones, Tottenham are among the clubs interested in Roony Bardghji.
The journalist also noted that Newcastle and Manchester City are keen and have a concrete level of interest.
“Right, last one and a very quick. Roony Bardghji, who obviously is an incredibly talented young player, Copenhagen, who is one of the most highly rated talents in Europe, but who has not played a game this season because he suffered a very serious injury to his knee last May or so in one of the last games of the campaign,” The host said.
So we haven’t seen at all what, what, you know, what’s happened this season. His rehabilitation appears to be going quite well, but it was always going to be long-term. His contract actually ends in December, which is pretty weird, but it’s just the way of how this works sometimes.
But I would be very surprised if there’s not serious interest in him this summer. And also if Copenhagen weren’t tempted to sell, given that they’ve just done a season pretty much without him and that he could walk away for free in December.
“Yeah, such a good player. Be able to get him for about seven to eight million pounds in the summer by kind of getting in there early. And I think someone will do that,” Jones said.
“I’ll be surprised if he did actually become a free agent at the end of the calendar year as opposed to moving in this summer transfer window. Man City, Tottenham and Newcastle are the names that I’m given on him in terms of concrete levels of interest. Obviously at the moment, they haven’t really been able to be active on anything because he hasn’t been playing, he’s been injured for so long,”
“But he’s now on the comeback trail, he’s working his way back. And so all three of those will be keeping close tabs on his situation, hoping to see exactly the same player that they were seeing before that injury.
“Aston Villa, one that’s been mentioned to me as well. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they are in that conversation.”
Young stars who came back from bad injuries
Bardghji is something of a risky signing for any team, but particularly Tottenham.
Indeed, Bardghji’s recent injury has been a real hindrance in terms of his development, and it’s unclear how he will develop from here.
Some players can have their careers completely derailed by injuries at a young age – Ansu Fati, Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby are but a few examples.
However, there are also some top players who recovered well from bad injuries at a young age.
Young players who returned from bad injuries | Injury |
---|---|
Florian Wirtz | ACL |
Riccardo Calafiori | ACL |
Ousmane Dembele | Numerous knee injuries |
Ruud van Nistelrooy | ACL |
Aaron Ramsey | Broken leg |
The likes of Florian Wirtz, Riccardo Calafiori and Ousmane Dembele are considered among the best players in the world right now, and they had terrible injuries at a young age only to bounce back better.
Meanwhile, historically, Ruud van Nistelrooy had a terrible injury just before his move to Manchester United, while Aaron Ramsey became an Arsenal legend after breaking his leg as a youngster. In fact, Ramsey thought he would have to retire at one point.
Bardghji could well be a similar example, but, as ever, Spurs need to proceed with caution if they’re thinking about signing a player with a sketchy injury history.
